We do tree planting differently. Our initiative to plant 1 billion trees is led by smallholder farmers and every seedling planted is an opportunity for them and their families to prosper.
Since 2019 we’ve been on a mission to equip the smallholder farmers we work with to plant 1 billion trees across sub-Saharan Africa by 2030. Planting trees alongside crops (otherwise known as agroforestry) – is one of the most powerful and environmentally impactful tools farmers have to increase income, food security, climate resilience and prosperity for their families.

Every tree that a farmer plants pays for itself many times over. When income from other sources is scarce, trees can provide a reliable safety net for rural farm families. How do we know this? We use a highly rigorous methodology to estimate the financial value to farmers of our tree-planting program, counting only surviving, additional trees.
