Kenya Custom Fertilizer Blends Trial

Agricultural innovation
This report shares the results of custom fertilizer blend trials that were conducted on farmer fields in the long rain season of 2015 in western Kenya.

Fertilizer use in Africa has historically been low and although there have been increases in its use across the continent; for small-scale farmers, the choices of fertilizers they can use are still limited. The available fertilizers usually contain only the main nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium. These may or may not match the specific needs of the soil, which might lack other important nutrients like zinc, magnesium, or calcium. If these nutrients are missing, using fertilizer might not help the crops grow much. Additionally, soil acidity can make it hard for plants to access these nutrients.

In 2015, One Acre Fund tried a new way of using fertilizer. We looked at both the overall nutrients plants need and the soil's acidity. By addressing both of these factors at the same time, we aimed to help small farmers increase their crop yields and use fertilizer more effectively.
