Founded in 2006, One Acre Fund supplies 1 million smallholder farmers with the agricultural services they need to make their farms vastly more productive. Our 8,000+ team is drawn from diverse backgrounds and professions. With operations across six core countries in Africa, we make farmers more prosperous by providing quality farm supplies on credit, delivered within walking distance of farmers’ homes, and agricultural training to improve harvests. On average, the farmers we serve harvest 50 percent more food after working with One Acre Fund.

About the Role

Our passionate development team manages a range of web and mobile solutions to support our field operations, from registering millions of farmers and their orders, optimizing delivery truck loads and routes, tracking deliveries, collecting mobile payments and analyzing loan repayments. 

The department is looking for both a Junior Software Engineer (Specialist) and a Software Engineer (Associate).  Learn more about the job levels on our careers page. Both positions will report to the Software Development Lead.

  • Junior Software Engineer: 3+ years OF experience.
  • Software Engineer: 5+ years of experience.

Our technologies include C#, NodeJS, CouchBase, React (Native), Docker/Kubernetes, and our tooling landscape is based on GitHub / JIRA / Slack / Azure DevOps.


  • Work as part of a small, collaborative, and agile team of software developers
  • Design, develop, document, test, and operate new and existing technology solutions according to our standards
  • Ensure smooth progress of your projects
  • Participate in your Agile team's lifecycle
  • Contribute to your department's improvement by sharing knowledge, sharpening your skills, suggesting different ways of working and developing
  • At the Associate level, you will be mentoring junior team members

Across all roles, these are the general qualifications we look for. For this role specifically, you will have:

  • Experience in solid programming skills, autonomy, and a mindset of testing and automation (3+ years for Junior Software Engineer and 5+ years for Software Engineer
  • A degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics or related fields is essential.
  • High proficiency in at least one major web or mobile front-end technology (Angular, React, Vue.js)
  • High proficiency in at least one major back-end language (.Net C#, Java, Go, NodeJS)
  • Comfortable with one or more database engines (Postgres, MongoDB, Couchbase)
  • Experience with automated testing frameworks and continuous integration
  • Experience working in Agile
  • A passion for solving problems and providing workable solutions
  • Strong analytical and reasoning skills with an ability to visualise processes and outcomes

  • Junior Software Engineer: Must be a Citizen or permanent resident of Kenya, Rwanda, Nigeria, Burundi, Malawi, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda or Zambia.
  • Software Engineer: One Acre Fund can support a work permit for this role. However, nationals of (or those with an extensive professional background and work history in) our countries of operation are preferred.
