New Bean Varieties (2014)
In 2014, One Acre Fund evaluated eleven different bush and climbing bean varieties in Rwanda, for both yield and farmer preference. Because households in Rwanda frequently suffer from iron deficiency and anemia, iron-enriched varieties developed by Harvest Plus were also evaluated. One Acre Fund worked with RAB (the Rwandan Agricultural Board) and Harvest Plus (a program of the CGIAR) to identify the most promising bush and climbing
bean varieties for One Acre Fund areas of operation.

In just the first season farming with One Acre Fund, Claudine Ayinkamiye, a 30-year-old farmer from Rwanda, managed to produce 900 kilos of potatoes and maize. Fifty-two-year-old One Acre Fund field officer Alphonsine Nyiransabimana dreams of a thriving agricultural industry in Rwanda, where farmers can earn a decent living. She is working to fulfill this mission by helping farmers in her local community access credit and quality seeds so that they can increase their harvests and adapt to extreme weather caused by the climate crisis.
