By Kelvin Owino and One Acre Fund

An estimated 15 percent of all agricultural soils in Africa are affected by soil acidity. Lime is an excellent soil acidity control tool and is available throughout many countries of East Africa. However, cost and transportation difficulties preclude lime from being accessible to smallholder farmers. For lime to be effective at mitigating soil acidity, large quantities of it are required, and it is practically impossible to smallholder farmers to access one or more metric tonnes of lime. This report outlines the work of One Acre Fund to deliver lime and other soil acidity-ameliorating tools to smallholder farmers in East Africa.
