Banana production white paper

Impact study
This report outlines the methodology used to trial four improved banana varieties at the Kibogora research station.

Bananas are a food security crop in much of East Africa. In Rwanda it is the second most widely grown crop and it also has some of the greatest concentrations of smallholder banana farmers in Africa. However significant yield gaps exist in banana production in Rwanda due to poor plant quality and low use of best management practices. One Acre Fund partnered with the Rwandan Agricultural Board (RAB) and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) to identify the most promising commercial and pre-commercial improved banana varieties and nutrient management techniques. At our research station in Kibogora, Rwanda we trialed four improved banana cultivars and compared them to a mixed local variety.
