We provide quality farm supplies on credit, delivered within walking distance of farmers’ homes, and agricultural trainings to improve harvests. We measure our success by our ability to make farmers more prosperous: On average, farmers harvest 50 percent more food after working with One Acre Fund.

We are growing quickly. We currently serve more than 800,000 farm families in Eastern and Southern Africa, with more than 7,500 full-time staff, and we aim to serve 1 million farm families by 2020.

Job Description

The Growth Countries Deputy Manager/Director role is to work with the Growth Country Director and in-country teams to support the strategic needs and improve the outcomes of the programs. Our Growth Countries are the future growth engines of One Acre Fund's impact. The Director and Deputy's job is to identify the key opportunities and key initiatives that will ensure Growth Countries are able to effectively contribute to our 2030 goal of providing impact to 10 million farmers. Specifically, the Deputy will play an essential coordination role for the increasing complexity of the work of Zambia, Tanzania, and Malawi programs.They will focus on 1) coordinating strategic planning around team, OKRs, and budget, 2) providing key leadership development support, 3) supporting country outcomes through specific strategic project initiatives, 4) supporting senior recruiting and 4) supporting internal communications.  Additionally, the Deputy will represent the Growth Countries internally and externally to further increase access to leadership as we grow. 

To succeed in this role you will need to be exceptionally well-organized, an extremely good communicator and intrinsically motivated by “getting stuff done.” Experience in One Acre Fund program roles is helpful, but not required. This role is an opportunity to drive results for the Growth Country programs, shape organisation culture and make colleagues better at their jobs. 

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead Strategic Planning. Develop strong relationships with Country Directors and work with them to coordinate country wide strategic planning. Support Country Directors to design strong annual OKR’s and implement systems to regularly loop back to them and check progress. Work as a key liaison with the finance department on the budget, ensuring that teams have operational plans in place to complete the budget on time and providing key support and strategic direction. Support high level tracking of performance metrics through the Growth Countries dashboard. Oversee succession & org chart planning for each country, ensuring leadership is being thoughtful about building and maintaining a strong team. When possible, use their knowledge of each country program to make connections between individual for collaboration, and to transfer key learnings and best practices for maximum efficiency. 

  • Support Internal Communications. Take a leadership role in internal communication for growth countries. Lead efforts to keep staff informed on program direction and engaged with key strategic conversations. Help senior leaders identify, prioritize, and respond to trends in staff feedback. Create core messages and materials to support country priorities, with regular editing and ghostwriting. Roll out key organizational messages to core countries. 

  • Improve team culture and performance. Work directly with the Country Directors to own and accelerate projects that can improve country wide team culture and performance. Projects could include coordinating feedback from the entire team on a new culture code; supporting with major projects from the HR pipeline and organising new team and community events to build morale. Take ownership of coordinating directly with the Global Training lead to ensure that the major annual training sequences are being executed flawlessly in the growth countries and lead on the delivery of major trainings for senior staff. Maintain 4-5 individual mentorship relationships for 3-6 months  at a time, working with country leadership to identify the correct staff to invest in. 

  • Support Senior Recruiting. Work with the Country Leadership team to provide support for Director and Senior Director recruiting as well as support overall country wide recruiting. Support with crafting and implementing innovative sourcing strategies for director and senior director roles. Work with Country Leadership to make progress on plans to diversify senior leadership across the Growth Country programs and provide targeted support where required. 

  • Lead critical strategic initiatives. Take full ownership of projects that have country wide strategic importance. These projects could include providing direction on key program outcome decisions/planning like repayment, enrollment, or expansion; preparing proposals for major org-wide strategy meetings; developing new culture initiatives; supporting new cross-country financial efficiency projects and performing specific pieces of data analyses. This could also involve helping the Country Leadership team respond to any crisis or emergency situations by providing extra support and coordination. They should use their strategic project engagement and knowledge of each country’s context to build collaboration between counterparts in different countries when necessary, and find efficiencies by sharing best practices.

Qualifications
