Our Process

We’re passionate about the work we do, and our interview process is designed for you to experience that work first-hand. We use a unique combination of interviews and exercises to help candidates understand the day-to-day work in the role. For example, you might spend time working from one of our offices, touring our field operations, or meeting our clients. 

Making a decision on your next job is a big step. We believe that the application process should help both of us figure out whether we’d work well together. To ensure consistency, we evaluate all candidates using the same process and regularly review our data to ensure an unbiased, effective process.

What to Expect

Our hiring process is deliberately thorough and may be longer than those you’ve experienced before. It can last up to three months, with 2-3 weeks between each stage. The exact process varies from role to role but, on average, you should expect the following:

  • Plum Testing: Most roles complete a PLUM survey.  This short assessment evaluates skills you’d bring to the job like problem-solving, innovation, and emotional intelligence. We review results together with your CV and cover letter.

  • 2-3 Interview Rounds: Candidates who pass our initial screening stage are invited to interview. We believe that you should get to know us as we get to know you, and you’ll interact with our team in 30-90 minute interviews. We don’t want to be the only ones asking the questions, so you’ll have time to ask your own throughout the process.

  • 1-3 Practical “Work” Exercises: In between interviews, expect to complete one to three practical exercises. Exercises simulate real business scenarios and mimic the daily responsibilities of the job (like creating a work plan or a writing sample). They’re intended to help you understand the job, and to help us learn how you’d perform in the role. We never reuse candidates’ exercises or share them beyond the hiring committee.

  • 1-3 Day Finalist Interview: Finalists are invited to spend time at one of our offices (typically where the role is based) for an in-person interview. These often include a final exercise, to be completed during the visit, and a short presentation to a small panel of leaders in the organisation. As the final round involves a substantial time investment for both the candidate and organisation, we only invite candidates who we are seriously considering for an offer. We also align on general salary expectations in advance, and then confirm the final package once we make an offer.

For any given role, we receive very strong applications from more candidates than we can hire. Typically, we extend an offer to just one in three finalists. We appreciate the investment in time and energy that every single one of our applicants makes in putting Farmers First.
