A ripple effect of positive impact
For smallholder farmers dependent on the rain and a small plot of land to grow their livelihoods, a little support goes a long way. Access to the right seeds, tools, and training helps farmers maximise their harvests. Higher yields mean more produce to sell, which means a higher income. That means more money in farmers’ pockets - money that they can invest back into their land, children, and communities.
That’s what Tanzanian farmer Merry Ramsoni Lukosi did when she started working with One Acre Fund. By expanding her crop of avocado trees, she was able to bring in more income from selling avocados in larger quantities. Not only did her finances get a boost, her nutrition did too. “I am able to improve my diet by eating avocados with my meals,” says Merry. She also sells avocados to her neighbours, improving their access to healthy food.
With One Acre Fund’s support, Merry has also grown 50 Grevillea trees from seedlings. She plans to expand her income by selling their timber. Investing in her land is helping Merry, 52, to save for her future. She plans to buy a motorcycle, which can be used for a taxi-style service in her community.

“I am getting older. There may come a day when I am not able to work in the field or when I am sick. I will be sure to earn money because I will give my motorcycle to someone to drive for business, and they will be bringing me money”

One Acre Fund supports farmer entrepreneurs
Your donation helps One Acre Fund provide smallholder farmers with high-quality farm supplies like seeds and tools - all accessible within walking distance of their homes - as well as training on how to maximize their harvests. With these new tools and techniques, farmers are equipped to forge new pathways to prosperity.
It’s not only farmers and their communities that benefit from your donation. With your support, farmers are able to grow more food for the global market, contributing to global food security. Farmers are also able to invest their profits into protecting the planet for future generations. By employing sustainable farming techniques, planting trees, and boosting the health of their soils, farmers can ensure that their families can grow healthy crops for years to come.
Since joining One Acre Fund’s tree-planting program in 2020, Malawian farmer James Katungwe has become a local distributor of trees and timber. Selling wooden beams has allowed him to pay for school fees, transport for his son to travel to South Africa, and even the construction of a new house for another of his children. Tree planting has given him financial independence.

“I’m very happy that I no longer work for other people in their fields in order to make a little money. Now, I focus on my field, harvest a few trees and I sell”
Another happy consequence of James’ tree-planting is the change he’s seen in the area. “My maize crops are not destroyed by heavy winds. Our surroundings are now cooler as we have more shade.” James plants Albizia Lebbeck trees, locally known as the Mtangatanga tree, which is naturally nitrogen-fixing. “Another benefit of the trees is that they are improving the soil health,” he says.
James sees tree planting as an investment in the future. “Because sometimes people come to find me looking for trees I feel motivated to plant more trees so I can leave them to my children in case I pass away.”
For farmers, a little support goes a long way
These transformations wouldn’t be possible without your support - and no amount is too small to invest in the future. Even little donations can have a big impact. For every $1 received in support, farmers can generate $4. That means a one-time donation of $30 becomes $120 of income that farmers can invest in their children and communities. And a monthly donation of just $5 multiplies to $240 for farmers to invest back in their land and communities every year.
